The Story Behind the First Gerber® Baby
It all started in 1928 when Gerber hosted a contest to find the perfect baby face for a new baby food ad campaign. Among the submissions, artist Dorothy Hope Smith presented a simple charcoal sketch of a sweet, tousle-haired baby with twinkling eyes and pouty lips. Smith offered to complete the sketch if chosen, but the Gerber team fell in love with its raw charm and decided to use it as it was.
The now-iconic Gerber Baby became so popular that in 1931, Gerber adopted it as the official trademark. Since then, this adorable face has been a symbol of Gerber’s dedication to happy, healthy babies everywhere.
Who was the original Gerber Baby? Over the years, guesses ranged from Hollywood stars like Humphrey Bogart to Elizabeth Taylor. But the real inspiration was Ann Turner Cook, a mystery novelist and retired English teacher. Cook, whose baby portrait captured hearts worldwide, even attended the unveiling of Gerber’s updated packaging in 1996, where her timeless sketch remained an integral part of the brand.

In 1982, Gerber Childrenswear revolutionized babywear with the invention of the Onesies® Brand bodysuit, designed to keep little one’s comfy and happy with just a snap. Over time, Gerber Childrenswear expanded its offerings to include playwear, accessories, bedding, bath essentials, and even larger sizes (up to 5T!).
